Comparison of the school violence tendencies between students with disabilities and non-disabled students at elementary and middle schools

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the school violence tendencies between students with disabilities and non-disabled students at elementary and middle schools. Two hundred and eighty nine students with disabilities and 612 non-disabled students from 71 schools participated in the survey. Two independent sample t-tests were implemented to analyze the data. The results of the study were as follows: First, non-disabled students had higher perpetrate tendencies than students with disabilities. Both group of students showed that the verbal perpetrate tendencies were strongest and the social perpetrate tendencies were weakest. There was no statistically significant difference of the perpetrate tendencies between elementary and middle school students with disabilities. On the contrary. non-disabled middle school students showed higher physical perpetrate tendencies than non-disabled elementary school students. For both non-disabled students and students with disabilities male students showed higher perpetrating tendencies than female students. Second, students with disabilities showed higher victimization tendencies than non-disabled students. Both groups experienced verbal victimization the most. For students with disabilities. there was no statistically significant difference according to grade and gender. For non-disabled students. there was no statistically significant difference according to grade, but there was a significant difference according to gender. That is, male non-disabled students experienced higher physical victimization tendencies than female non-disabled students. Limitations of the study and implications for future researches were discussed.
